MEET THE COACH: Daryl Jenkins

Interviewed by Mara Dresner

What’s the most important thing people should know about coaching?
The most important thing a person should know about coaching is that the coach can only go so far; it’s up to the individual to realize that success, to realize that potential. The coach can help you see it, can guide you to it. It’s up to the individual to do the work to achieve it.

We can agree that Michael Jordan is a good athlete – he uses a coach. The one thing you’ll never hear the announcer saying is that Michael Jordan’s coach is making the winning basket. It’s up to the individual to realize that potential.

What are the three biggest challenges facing salon/spa owners today?
I’d have to say #1 is debt. I think debt is a huge challenge for people. They don’t understand what debt does to them. Another thing is cash-flow management, knowing where money is going instead of where it went. People don’t know what’s going on with the money. Another challenge is not managing what’s on their plate. They’re pulled in so many different directions. They don’t know what to handle at their level, and what should be handled at another level.

What business book has influenced you recently?
No-Compromise Leadership, simply because Neil [Ducoff] has been able to write down in one place the tidbits he’s been giving us over the years. That book helped me understand how much leadership plays into having a successful business. At first I kind of thought it was all about the money. I’ve read it several times.

What’s your favorite movie?
I would have to say, Meet the Parents because of this one scene, where Ben Stiller is trying to board an airplane. He’s the only person at the terminal gate, and they still make him wait until his zone is called.  When I see it, I laugh as if I’d never seen it before – it’s just hysterical to me.

Why should someone give Strategies a try?
From a salon/spa standpoint, we’ve been where they’ve been. The added benefit we bring to the table is our personal experience. Many of the mistakes I help them avoid, I’ve made and I have the scars to prove it.

It’s not just academia. We live it; we breathe it. We have a servant’s heart. We care. We want people to be successful.
